Situated over 1000kms away from Brisbane, Longreach station is the terminus station on the Central Western Line. The station is served by 'The Spirit Of The Outback' a passenger service from Roma Street station in Brisbane to Longreach station twice a week. The station was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on the 12th of December 2005. Longreach Station is comprised of a single platform, a three track yard and a nearby goods shed. The present station building was finished in 1916.
Plans to build a railway in southern Queensland in 1863 sparked calls by residents for a railway to be constructed in central Queensland. As a result a railway line that stretched about 40 kilometers from Rockhampton to Westwood was built in 1867. Over the next 25 years, the line kept expanding further and further west before reaching Longreach in 1892. The original Longreach station had no building, it was built in 1916. The year A.D 1916 can be seen on the front of the station building. A refreshment room was built shortly after the station building, it is now closed and is used as office space.
