Hawthorn station is comprised of 3 platforms, with a single entrance for each platform. A ramp off Burwood road for 2/3 and a basic entrance on Evansdale Road. There is a footbridge that joins the two platforms together. The buildings at the station are on the Victorian Heritage register.
The station originally opened with just platform 1 as a terminus station, in 1882 an additional platform was added for the newly opened branchline to Kew, which is now closed. A third track was added in 1972 between Burnley and Hawthorn, making the centre track a bi-direction track to run express train in peak hour. The station also recieved a $300,000 facelift in 1984 by The Met.
