The UGL Rail C44aci is a 4,270/4,350hp locomotive which has seen use under various freight operators in Australia. The units were designed by UGL Rail and built at their Broadmeadow factory in NSW. The first of these units entered service in 2008 with Pacific National’s 92 class locomotives. These units came about when PN contacted UGL for an upgraded NR class type unit, and a locomotive to match the performance of their existing 90 class units. They differ from QR National’s 5000 class, which are heavier and more modernised versions of the NR class designed for coal traffic in the Hunter Valley in NSW, introduced from 2005. This model did not suit PN’s requirements because of their heavier axle load, which was above the limit of most railway lines. The most direct competition in the modern day locomotive market in Australia, is with Downer EDI Rail’s GT46C Ace. RailCorp conducted testing between the two units, which resulted in the Downer model outperforming UGLs.
The NR’s Cv40-9i design and model was retained but with modifications including a more powerful GE 7FDL-16 engine, an enlarged radiator size, AC traction equipment, new fabricated bogie design as well as other body and cab modifications. They are identifiable from NR class units as their larger radiator overhangs each side at the rear of the long end. Weight of the locomotives can be adjusted by fuel loads depending on the line and services that the units are operating.

The first batch of C44aci models were ordered by Pacific National as the 92 class. These locomotives were in service between 2008 and 2009, as PN had seen how successful the 5000 class operated by QR National were in the Hunter Valley. PN would adopt a lighter design as some of their coal routes would not handle the full 180 tons of the 5000 class C40aci units. These locomotives have a very similar performance to the older and heavier 90 class, also solely used on coal services. The 92s were originally intended for intermodal work too, however would not see services between Sydney and Brisbane or Melbourne until 2012, before the 93 class introduction. 15 units were constructed in this class numbered 9201 to 9215. All units are in service currently on Hunter Valley coal traffic.

From 2012, Pacific National took delivery of the first 6 93 class C44aci locomotives which were introduced for intermodal freight transport between Melbourne and Brisbane. They are essentially the same as the previous 92 class locos. Another 5 units were ordered and delivered in 2013, and by 2017, 20 93 class units were in service. These units were used on intermodal service to Adelaide and could also be seen on the Overland passenger service for a period. The locomotives would be used in intermodal service for a period before being used on coal traffic in NSW primarily. In 2020, further units were introduced to traffic with the latest being 9324 in May 2020. They have since returned to intermodal service between Melbourne and Adelaide primarily.

During 2009, QR National made an order of 12 6000 class C44aci units for use on coal haulage in the Hunter Valley. These units were to be fitted with electronically controlled pneumatic braking equipment for the coal wagons they were to use. Some units were used by QRN subsidiary ARG in Western Australia. They were known as AC class and were painted in their yellow and red scheme. 6 further ACB class were constructed for WA operations in particular, entering service from 2011 in QRN/Aurizon livery. 3 further locos known as ACC class entered service from 2013. Standard 6000 class units were initially painted in the yellow, maroon and black livery, later Aurizon livery. They were used on coal and QRN intermodal services between Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, until these operations ceased in 2017. They allowed QRN to retire older CLP/CLF classes from intermodal traffic. Standard QRN 6000s have also been used in Western Australia as ACA class, to distinguish them from other intermodal locos. In 2012, the first of the 9 6020 class units were delivered. These were also used on intermodal services, and are now found in coal traffic. From 2017, the new 6040 class of 5 further units were delivered.

Introduced between 2011 and 2013, CFCLA ordered 12 C44aci model units from UGL to hire out to major freight operators in Australia, in two orders of 6. The units are numbered CF4401 to CF4412. The locomotives have been hired to operators such as Pacific National, Qube, Aurizon, SCT and SRS. Most units wear the standard CFCLA blue, yellow and silver livery, asides CF4412 which is painted in a special ‘Black Caviar’ livery. It is coloured pink, black and silver, the colours of the racehorse’s jockey of which it is named. CF4407 and CF4408 were completed in CFCLA colours however after delivery they were almost immediately repainted into Freightliner colours before they entered service with the respective company. After Freightliner ceased operation, they were repainted back into CFCLA livery. In April 2014, CF4401, CF4403, CF4409 and CF4410 were hauled to UGL Bassendean and then trucked to the Pilbara for long term lease to Rio Tinto. After they returned, units CF4401 and CF4409 were sold to Aurizon in 2016 and are now painted in their all over yellow livery for coal work in the Hunter Valley.

From April 2012, GWA took delivery of the first C44aci locomotives it had ordered from UGL which became GWU class. 11 units were part of the order, however the final 2 went to Pacific National to become 93 class. Another two intended for GWA went to MRL. These final locomotives were part of a planned second batch for 2013 which never eventuated. This left GWU001 to GWU009 with GWA. All locomotives were in service by June 2012, and wear the standard GWA orange and black livery. Initially, the locomotives were largely confined to South Australian operations, also being used on intermodal services to Darwin. Grain operations into Victoria would also see the class used, but only as far as Dimboola. A number of the fleet have moved into Hunter Valley coal operation along with acquired XRN class from Glencore after that company ceased. The XRNs retain their original classification but all are now painted in GWA livery. GWA has now been rebranded as One Rail Australia.

MRL acquired 4 C44aci units for Western Australian ore traffic, after the units were cancelled in an order for CRL (intended to become CRL class). Another 2 would also be acquired from a cancelled GWA GWU class order. They were eventually repainted into MRL’s red, black and grey livery and were transferred to WA. The units entered service in 2014, and would regularly be transferred to Melbourne’s UGL facility for maintenance for a couple of years. This was discontinued when maintenance could be undertaken locally. All remain in service, sometimes working with hired NR class when members of the MRL fleet are unavailable.

These locomotives began running as the permanent power for the container services between Sandgate to Port Botany. PHC001 is named ‘Carrot’ and PHC002 is named ‘Spud’, as owner Peter Crawford previously grew vegetables on his farm at Singleton. Both units are painted in Crawfords Freightlines’ red, grey and white livery. When in service, the units replaced hired power, mainly the Greentrains C class. Both remain on the service they are intended for.

Between 2010 and 2012, mining company Xstrata took delivery of 30 XRN class locomotives of the C44aci type from UGL. The locomotives are numbered XRN001 to XRN030 and operate in the Hunter Valley for coal operations. Units were painted in Xstrata’s blue, grey and yellow livery. In 2013, Xstrata was acquired by Glencore, with units receiving new signage but retained their original colours. Genesee & Wyoming Australia in turn took over Glencore operations in 2016 and all units have been repainted onto GWA livery, identical to the GWU class fleet. Units have retained their original classification and continue to work on GWA/One Rail Australia’s coal operations in the Hunter Valley.
