During WWII, four diesel-electric shunting locomotives were manufactured by General Motors and imported to NSW from the United States. As arrived they were essential stock GE 44 ton switchers except fitted with hook drawgear and buffers. Automatic couplers fitted not long after arrival. Cabs were modified after arrival as well. After the war they were put into use at Central Station as shunters. In October 1974, 7920 and 23 were sold to the British Phosphate Company, 7921 and 22 were sold to the Commonwealth Railways. 7920 and 23 were rebuilt by FR Tulk, Perth as 9401 and 9402. When the railway shut in 1987, 7921 returned to NSW and was preserved in Thirlmere. 7922 is in the National Railway Museum in Adelaide.
