Between 1960 and 1964, Clyde Engineering produced eighteen 49 class locomotives for the NSWGR. The locomotives weigh 80 tonnes and have a top speed of 125 km/h. In the early days of their career they were used to haul trains in the Western and North of NSW on both branch and main lines, as well as metropolitan trip trains across Sydney.
Today, 7 of the original 18 remain in service with Southern Shorthaul Railroad and the Manildra Group. 6 have been scrapped and 4 are preserved. |
