The 422 class was the first Australian locomotive to be built with non-streamlined dual cab bodies. They were manufactured by Clyde Engineering between 1969 and 1970 and a total of 20 locomotives were made. The locomotives themselves weigh 108 tonnes and have a top speed of 125km/h.
In their early days they worked on pass and freight trains across NSW. Including services like the Canberra Express, Intercapital Daylight, Southern Aurora and more. Today, 8 of the 20 locomotives remain operation. All of the operational 422s were reclassed as DCs, HLs and 22s. They are currently used by Watco and GWA. In 2015, four of the 422s were exported to Durban in South Africa where they were scrapped. All of Aurizon's 422s are in storage at Rothbury in the Hunter Valley. |
