In 2011, Qube Logistics ordered 12 new locomotives built by National Rail Equipment Company (NREC) in the USA, being delivered in two batches in December 2011 and in early 2012. Units 1101 and 1103 arrived in Newcastle on 19 November 2011 before commencing testing. These units are essentially standard Clyde locomotives but modernised to meet current regulations.
These units include a unique cab design and are single ended, however can operate long-end with some restrictions. All units carry Qube yellow and silver livery and have EMD 16-645E3B engines. The later units ordered by Qube were ultimately cancelled during construction, resulting in the locomotives being sold on to White Pass in Alaska as part of an order to NREC. These units have entered service on the White Pass and Yukon narrow gauge route during 2020. 1101 to 1108 were the only units shipped to Australia for Qube. In Australia, the Qube units are seen on most standard gauge Qube operations such as grain services in NSW and Victoria and various container services out of Sydney.
